What started as a friendly wager opened the door for one of New York’s premiere athletic (and charitable) events: The Decathlon, a one-day, 10-event competition that’s crowned Wall Street’s best all-around athlete since 2009.

Eight years ago, 11 friends gathered in a New York City park on a rainy, overcast weekend to settle a bet about who among them was the best athlete. The competition was the byproduct of a chummy rivalry between Dave Maloney, formerly a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley MS -1.05%, and Greg Feldman, then a fund wholesaler at money management firm Lord Abbett & Co. The scores for the 10 events were crunched over beers at a local bar and the winner (Feldman) was awarded a $15 plastic trophy and, more importantly, bragging rights.
