Anyone devoted to a sport has either experienced first hand, or has come across a cohort who has taken his or her passion into an obsession. The same can be said about similar situations in business or in our professional life. I am no exception, and to this day my obsession still exists: Finding the Ultimate Athlete on the planet!
It all began over 30 years ago, while competing in a variety of sports…You name just about any sport and I was doing it or I was willing to give it a go. Always pushing to the limit and I was really good at all the sports I took on, so it got me thinking “…What about finding the best athlete there is…Someone who can do it all?”. It even got me thinking I might have been the “one” at the time….I certainly know better now, but what it did was: It planted the seed.
With a diverse group of sports experts, we came up with what we think is the best recipe for such a competition. We then began speaking to financiers and sponsors, we established contacts around the globe to recruit participants, so we thought we were on our way…Until we began talking to networks and broadcast partners. Everyone liked the project, the competition and the future potential for the property…BUT, this had never been done before, unlike what we currently see on television: Singing shows, American Ninja Warriors, etc., and it sounded complicated, according to network executives, meaning: “…cameras will have to moved around!...Following those athletes in different environments….Couldn't we just keep the competitions under one roof?...Like in Cross Fit, X-Games or American Ninja Warriors?”. I explained to those same executives the following: This competition in not complicated, but it is complex, as it should be, since we are aiming to determine the best of the best athletes.
To complicate matters, since the beginning, I had decided to make the project a worthy endeavor, something more than just a sporting event. Our business model incorporated a significant philanthropic aspect, focusing on helping marginalized kids in the USA. That side of the project was also met with some resistance, but to this day, I am committed to staying true to my intention. Why my story? Today, reading Ken's post on “What is your Favorite Motivational Quote?” and reading some of your answers made me realized what I have learned from sports and how it has given me the necessary focus in life and in my career. Most importantly, it has taught me how to dig deeper, to think outside the box and to stay committed. So I am reaching out to the Executive Athletes community, asking: “What is your driving factor and what are trying to accomplish?”
