Let's face it, you're not growing your food. In fact, less than 1% of the population supplies 100% of our food. So, what's this article about? Who is today's Urban Farmer?
If you are in business, you are today's Urban Farmer. You are constantly cultivating new crops of customers to move the GDP in a direction that keeps "food on your table". You are affected by your business climate as is the farmer. When you are not caring for your crop the effects can be devastating. Your words are the water to the farmers soil.
As a young man I dreamed of being a farmer. I grew up with a farming background and was actively involved with the Future Farmers of America organization. The organization provided the foundation for leadership skills that went way beyond the field. Our Ag adviser, Rob Horn, taught us parliamentary procedure, public speaking, Roberts Rules of Order along with our agricultural studies. He was a stand for our achievement within the organization and is arguably responsible for legions of young leaders from my youth, including my classmate, Brigadier General Tammy Smith.
Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve
Simple enough for a high school kid to understand but real enough for anyone to live by. Ultimately, if you think about it, the final words of the motto "living to serve" really embody what we need to be successful in life. To serve gives us access and enables us to be leaders for others. Leaders serve.
Take a challenge and step into being a leader. Mr. Horn reminded us that anyonecan be a leader. Own your leadership. Here are some simple leadership tips:
Be an example.
Elevate those around you.
Embrace your power and a give it away.
Be a stand for all that is possible. "If there is a will, there is a way"
Lead with a yes.
Now, my urban farmer friends, reflect on who you are in the matter and cultivate your organic self. What will be your legacy? Let it be one of greatness and gratefulness. Be a contribution. Lead.
