I have been thinking about this quite a bit recently and I don’t know if I have a definitive answer. We all know that athletes come in all different shapes and sizes, can excel in different sports, and have different overall mindsets of what they believe is needed for ultimate performance. But if you had to define the athlete, what would it be?
Webster’s Dictionary definition: a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength. That is a terrible definition in my book!
I think it is much more than that. Is an athlete someone that can run the fastest, lift the most weight, have the best VO2 max or jump the highest? Is being an athlete a mindset? Can it be only one of these traits or do you need to incorporate all of these traits to be a true athlete. Then there is the question, who is the Ultimate Athlete?
If you had to define what an athlete is, what would be your definition?
