Health & Fitness Bringing Success in Business and Life!
We all know how easy it can be to get ‘caught up’ in your work. To get stuck in a routine of early starts and late finishes with a fatty and possibly alcohol soaked lunch in between. It was not so long ago that Friday was not considered a work day, but a prelude to a ‘boozy’ lunch followed by some networking over beers, scotch and wine. Well, times are changing rapidly with people now realising the importance of being healthy and not burning the candle at both ends. The only way to have traditionally sown up a deal was to have written yourself off over a lunch with the client in question, to prove your worth. Thankfully society is changing and so are the means for not only staying fit, but networking and growing your brand or business.
Evidence of these ‘fitness deals’ made front page news in 2013 when all it took was a workout session in the gym followed by conversation over breakfast at San Francisco's Four Seasons hotel for Verizon Communications Inc's Lowell McAdam and Vodafone Group Plc's Vittorio Colao to bridge a $30 billion, 10-year-long gap between their companies and strike the third-biggest corporate deal ever.
Let’s also not forget the prevalence of mental health issues in today’s society and the openness to discuss (albeit slowly) that was not socially acceptable only a few years ago. It has been proven that healthy eating, regular fitness and laughter contribute to living longer and happier.
So what is my point with all this I hear you ask? I want to bring to the forefront a few suggestions for sports that both men and women can partake in that not only will increase fitness and mental strength, but provides great business networking opportunities:
1) Golf – The most traditional form of outdoors sporting activity that provides the mental stimulus of the game, the ability walk in the fresh air whilst also bringing people (staff, clients or prospects) together for four hours or more. An ideal opportunity to begin open discussions whilst enjoying the outdoors.
2) Cycling – Like it or loath it, we know which side of the fence we sit, cycling is a fantastic sport that brings groups of people together every weekend, or even more often for the dedicated few. It is highly physical, mentally tough when staring at a hill climb but also rewarding once complete. At the conclusion of the ride the groups regale stories and experiences over a coffee and coming together as a group. An excellent way to get closer with existing contacts whilst making new ones.
3) CrossFit – The new kid on the block. A great sport for all ages, and one that takes but an hour of your day. CrossFit for those who may not be familiar trains functional movements with complex lifting and gymnastics movements to give the athlete a physical challenge at any fitness level. What people are finding so appealing about the sport is that it attracts highly motivated and positive people. Each ‘Box’, or gym, encourages team work, support and enjoying each session. This is another great way to not only challenge yourself physically but mentally as you can push the body as hard as you want. At the conclusion of every session you realise you have forgotten all about the stresses of work and have been enjoying the last 60 minutes with a group of friends. Working out so closely with people builds an immediate bond and professional and personal relationships form.
In today’s business world we know that long hours are par for the course (pardon the pun), but we are also now beginning to understand the importance of physical and mental health. If we are on top of these two very important points then business success can follow (as well as family and friendships). I urge you all to find time in your day or your week to try one of the sports above, or to find a sport that you enjoy and bring with you a colleague or professional contact and watch the relationship flourish. Get fit, laugh out loud and push yourself!
Fitness and success can go hand in hand, it does not have to be one or the other!
