One of the main reasons I LOVE endurance sports is because of the challenge. It’s not easy. It hurts (physically and mentally). I love it because I feel that it enables me to keep building this “super power” of transforming what seems impossible into possible. I feel that it helps me become a better person.
One of the most difficult things that endurance athletes face when we race or train is when we hit “The Wall”. We have all been there: we just want to stop, every single part of our body hurts, every step or pedal stroke feels like it takes forever. You just want to quit, sit down and have a beer or a nap!
Here is your free gift. I encourage you to follow these 10 steps, in order to help you be at your own best, feel great, and live your dream life, starting today!
STEP 1: BREATHE and GET PRESENT
When we are stressed, we do not even notice that we have shallow breathing. Let’s take 10 slow deep breaths right now: Close your mouth, and breathe in fresh air into your nose, as your belly rises. As you exhale, let your mouth open, jaw relax, belly fall, and sigh out an exhale, releasing any tension that is in there. Try this 3 times per day, for the next week.
Do you feel calmer? More energy? More alert?
STEP 2: GET THE EGO/MIND QUIET
Hopefully after you focus on your breathing, you feel calmer. Now, our next step is to help the mind calm down more too. Our ego/mind likes to struggle, worry, and create irrational fears. Let’s try this exercise: As you breathe in, say “1” to yourself, or see the number 1 (if you are visual). Then, as you exhale, say or see the number 2. Continue up to 10. If you notice other thoughts come into your brain, go back to number 1. It might be hard to get to number 10 – that is okay! Our goal is to become less attached to our thoughts, and have more ability to focus on command.
When does a passion become an obsession…And possibly a success story?
Anyone devoted to a sport has either experienced first hand, or has come across a cohort who has taken his or her passion into an obsession. The same can be said about similar situations in business or in our professional life. I am no exception, and to this day my obsession still exists: Finding the Ultimate Athlete on the planet!
It all began over 30 years ago, while competing in a variety of sports…You name just about any sport and I was doing it or I was willing to give it a go. Always pushing to the limit and I was really good at all the sports I took on, so it got me thinking “…What about finding the best athlete there is…Someone who can do it all?”. It even got me thinking I might have been the “one” at the time….I certainly know better now, but what it did was: It planted the seed.
We have lost the ability to think that hard work pays off. We live in a world of instant gratification and everyone expects to be able to get what they want without working for it. I don't understand this philosophy. When did working hard for something become old school? In order to be the best athlete, business person, doctor, or overall awesome human being, you must work your ass off! Many people will say that working smart is a better way, which it is, but you can't just work smart without working hard, to get what you want. If you think Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, Einstein, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Greg Lemond got to where they are by just working smart, you are mistaken. They are some of the hardest working individuals to ever walk the planet. To be the best and to reach your goals, the number one thing is working your ass off!
Once you begin to understand your true potential, it can become really frightening! Once you embrace that fear and make it your friend, you can go to places you never thought imaginable.
Believing in yourself is key to getting what you want. Sometimes it is one of the hardest things to do when you faced with difficult circumstances. We are all vulnerable to this, but if you reach into your core, and trust your heart, the right thing to do will come to you! Believe in yourself, because if you don't, no one else will!
